Andrew Spice19 year-old Andrew Spice sounds like nobody else. Perhaps it was the seclusion of growing up in the wilds of Headingley, Manitoba, immersing himself in classical piano studies while absorbing the beats and bravery of artists like Radiohead, Tori Amos, Nine Inch Nails, and Massive Attack. The result is an inspired new songwriter, who with only a piano and his voice, emotes a timeless quality unmatched in even the most accomplished singer-songwriters.
When most teenagers were unaware of their surroundings, consumed by the plasticity of modern radio and music media, Andrew Spice was spending his time diving into the darkest crevices of his heart. In his songs, Andrew writes about coming of age, coming to terms with the person he has become, and wrapping his head around love and loss in a mysterious time of change, beauty, and fear. His songs retain a pop sensibility through it all, whether it’s the wistful regret of his signature song, "Silent Rain", or the heart wrenching lyrics in "Matthew", his tribute to hate crime victim Matthew Shepard.
Spice’s unrivaled and sensitive journey through music is something rare and exceptionally important in a day and age where the true essence of a great song is so often left behind. His songs go where other artists fear to tread, and the vulnerability in his writing is the sort that gives the listener a soft place to fall, a quiet assurance that we are not alone in our sometimes uncertain human experience.
