The 13th Annual Festival
Of Small Breweries

The autumn ritual of our Festival Of Small Breweries was observed by hundreds of the usual suspects on October 12, 2001, from beer weenies to weekend warriors. While one might think that doing the same thing year after year could be a little dull, we always manage to find a few new and interesting products to taste. Besides, do you know any beer drinker that ever tires of the pursuit of the perfect pint? In all, this year there were three dozen choices.

Here's a statistical summary of the evening's proceedings:

  • Best Of The Festival for the third year running was McAuslan's St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout receiving a median score of 41.5 out of 50. C'est What Coffee Porter (cask conditioned) came in a close second at 41. St. Ambroise Pale Ale, K.L.B. Raspberry Wheat, and Ste. André Vienna Lager did their brewers proud with scores of 39.
  • The Most Curious award for the most tasted beer goes to Trafalgar's Roggenbier. The crowds were eager to try Belle Gueulle and K.L.B. Alien Ale as well. Shows the value of an exotic name to grab attention, we think.
  • Just as there are those who look at a mountain and see a challenge to climb instead of staying at the bottom and admiring the view, there is always someone who looks at the line up of brews and just has to try them all. The Kid In A Candy Store award honours Brian Kennedy for rating (if not trying) all thirty-six beers. We are sure the he followed C.C.C. (Clinton code of conduct) rules for professional tasters and did not actually swallow any beer.
  • The citizens selected to serve on the jury awarded the Critic's Choice top three in a "blind" tasting. Finishing first was C'est What Rye Beer, followed by Blanche de Chambly and Amsterdam Frambroise.

Our thanks to our fine local brewers for producing such drinkable fare, our hard working staff, and to the diligent beer lovers who make this festival an annual success.
